• the Next Generation English Language Arts Learning Standards for the grade they teach (k-8)
• the importance of having a firm grasp on all elements of fiction and nonfiction, as we better balance our literacy instruction
• the expectations for our children and how we can make them more successful and motivated to read and write while feeling less frustrated
• the highly evolved vocabulary and terms that are emphasized at each grade level

Understand

• why there was a need to revamp and improve our current learning standards
• how to compare the Next Generation Learning Standards to the Common Core Standards that are currently in place
• what each standard means and how it impacts instruction
• how to apply the Next Generation Learning Standards into the classroom each day
• why it is crucial to meet these standards

and Be Able To

• modify existing lessons as well as create new and exciting lessons for children that meet the Next Generation Learning Standards. You don't have to reinvent the wheel
• motivate and select appropriate texts for children to enjoy while teaching them how to effectively read, analyze, and respond to both fiction and nonfiction
• break down texts across many genres while developing lessons that assess the many of levels of comprehension that we strive to teach each day
• take away from the class a variety of downloadable/printable documents as well as online resources for lesson design and reference
• apply what they are learning throughout the course into their classrooms as the course is running in order to get feedback and exchange ideas
